Students answered the Book Chat questions about Pygmalion and discussed the following ideas:
1. Henry Higgins is a "detestable" character
2. Eliza Doolittle is not too bad, but she is quite "childish".
3. There is no romantic interest between the two. In fact, there may be some romantic interest between Higgins and Pickering (the two "confirmed bachelors").
4. Higgins and Pickering represent the upper class, Doolittle the middle class, Eliza the lower class.
5. The ending is reasonably unsatisfactory, but mainly because Higgins is so mean and arrogant. Why doesn't he treat everyone like a duchess rather than a flowergirl?
6. Shaw is obsessive with his descriptions and stage directions. It is also very interesting that he refers to characters by different names depending on their position at the time.
There are also study questions on the sheet that need to be answered for homework.
