Gatsby - The Opening Scenes

For the last couple of lessons we have looked at the opening couple of chapters of the book in order to get a handle on Nick, Tom and Daisy and the nature of East Egg, West Egg and the Valley of Ashes. Students need to particularly look at the way the characters interact with each other and the language Fitzgerald uses to create the characters. Students also consider: what is Nick Carraway really like? is he as noble as he thinks he is? what sort of person is Tom? why does Daisy stay with Tom?

We also looked at the first 20 minutes of the Baz Luhrmann film as its representation of desire and love is quite strong.
